Fatal Car Accident Near Bemidji

One person died and four others were injured when two vans collided head-on near Bemidji. It happened at about 12:54 pm yesterday afternoon
on New Bass Rd NE in Turtle River Township.

The “jaws of life” was used to extract the injured from the vehicles.

The driver of one vehicle, Anthony Dwayne Calloway, age 45 was airlifted to Essentia in Fargo. Dawn Marie Boyd, age 47, a passenger in Calloway’s vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, Richard Lee Jones was taken to the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for treatment.

The other vehicle was driven by Heidi Lee, age 36, of Bemidji. She was accompanied by her 2 year old son. Mrs. Lee was airlifted to Essentia Hospital in Fargo by North Memorial Air Ambulance. Her son was taken to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

According to a press release from Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, the investigation so far, indicates Calloway’s vehicle was northbound on New Bass Rd NE and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with Lee’s car which was driving southbound and had swerved toward the shoulder to avoid the oncoming vehicle. Contributing factors to this crash remain under investigation.

A Ponsford woman was killed in a rollover at about 6:05 am Monday morning in Becker county. According to the state patrol, Vicki Hernandez, 44, of Ponsford was eastbound on Highway 225, one mile north of Highway 34,when her Chevy Tahoe left the road and rolled. She was ejected and died at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

On Wednesday, September 28, 2011, Blackduck Police and the Beltrami
County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for assistance from the
Blackduck High School regarding a threat made by a juvenile student. The
juvenile made statements to witnesses suggesting they shouldn’t come to
school because the juvenile planned to attack people at the school. As
soon as school authorities became aware of the threat they contacted law
enforcement which triggered an investigation by police and school
officials. This investigation resulted in the immediate arrest of a
juvenile student who had initiated the threats.

The Blackduck Police Department, Beltrami County Sheriff’s Deputies and
school officials believe the arrest resolved any potential threat or
danger to any of the students in the school district from this threat.

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Wednesday in Polk County District Court in the trial of the man accused of killing Mahnomen County Deputy Chris Dewey.

Thomas Fairbanks took the stand in his own defense on Tuesday. Dewey was shot in February, 2009 and died last August.

Sargeant Matthew A. Harmon of Lengby, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan, was laid to rest on Saturday in Lengby. Funeral services were held at 2 pm at the High School in Fosston with over 400 in attendance.

The Patriot Honor Guard motorcycle group stood guard at the High School entrance starting at 10 am until the service concluded. Traffic on U.S. Highway Two was halted in both directions for the first time in nearly forty years to allow the funeral procession to line up. The Honor Guard, Minnesota State Patrol, Polk County Sheriff's Department as well as numerous area law enforcement agencies, fire departments and EMS services escorted the fallen soldier's casket in a procession that stretched from Fosston to the cemetery at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby. Flag waving citizens paying their last respects as the procession made its way by lined U.S. Highway two.

Governor Mark Dayton ordered all U.S. and state flags at government buildings to be flown at half-staff to honor Sergeant Harmon. Dayton, along with Senator Amy Klobuchar and Congressman Collin Peterson attended the funeral service in Fosston. Dayton hand delivered a proclamation recognizing Harmon's sacrifice and extended gratitude and prayers to his family and friends.

The 29-year-old Fosston High School graduate was killed in the line of duty on August 14th in Afghanistan after being injured by an improvised explosive device. Harmon served two tours of duty in Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan.

His wife and their three children as well as his parents, sisters, brothers and other relatives, survive Sergeant Harmon.

Fosston Mayor Jim Offerdahl commented today that "Although the Westboro Baptist Church has the right under the first amendment to protest at military funerals, the protesters are not welcome in the City of Fosston". He went on to say "I have no reason to believe the protestors will cause any trouble, but it is sad that they will be a distraction from this solemn event". Mayor Offerdahl also said he has been assured by Polk County Sheriff Barb Erdman that there will be a large contingency of law enforcement in Fosston tomorrow afternoon, The Polk County Sheriff's department contracts with the City of Fosston to provide law enforcement services in Fosston.
